About the Process:

Obtaining the items: When possible, I visit with the military personnel and/or his or her loved ones. Gaining insight on the significance of the items I am about to photograph is crucial to helping me discover how best to arrange and highlight the compilation of items based on their level of importance. I am also willing to travel, depending on the distance and other potential photography opportunities in the area if significant distance is involved.

Behind the Lens:

I carefully and strategically arrange one’s military uniform, gear, and other related meaningful service items on a clean surface, taking special care with these significant items. Once the items are arranged in a way that works well with the lighting and camera frame, I take a multitude of photographs under varied lighting angles and brightness.

The Final Product:

Once I have several workable shots, I upload the raw photos into professional photo editing software, and layer various photos of the same angle but with contrasting lighting, allowing me to create a dramatic and unique final image. After the image is created there are several options for printing the final product such as a photographic print, canvas gallery wrap, or metal on a float mount. I’ve perfected this process over the years and have had the amazing opportunity to work with military keepsakes and their owners as you can see from the sample photos on this website.

The Inspiration:

Growing up, I was taught to respect those in uniform and have known a number who have, or continue to serve, in the armed forces. I have the utmost reverence for these people and all that they do for our great country, and the sacrifices they and their families endure so that we can be free.

The idea began as a Christmas present my mom wanted to give my dad. She gathered items from all of our family members that served for me to create a print with the saying, "Home of the free, because of the brave."

While I didn’t know exactly how I would go about it, I knew that I eventually wanted to dedicate a portion of my time and career to these courageous men and women, so much so that I had the phrase, “Home of the Free, Because of the Brave.” trademarked.
